Overview

Suffian Hussain is a pupil barrister who started his 12-month pupillage with chambers’ London centre in October 2023. His pupillage is focused on business and property dispute resolution. Following the successful completion of his first six, Suffian is now on his feet and available to take instructions in his own right, both to appear in court and on advisory matters.

Before studying for the Bar, Suffian worked as a financial analyst in the City, where he managed an active book of business for his corporate client. In the year preceding pupillage, Suffian worked as a judicial assistant in the Commercial and Chancery divisions of the High Court. Suffian assisted several High Court judges with research, summary notes in permission to appeal paper applications and observed several multi-day trials, consequential hearings and the interim hearings list.

Notable cases he helped with include:

Krishna v Gowrie and others [2023] EWHC 1538 (Ch): Assisted Mr Justice Adam Johnson with an unfair prejudice petition.

London International Exhibition Centre Plc v Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Plc & Ors [2023] EWHC 1481 (Comm): Assisted Mr Justice Jacobs with the ‘at the premises’ business interruption preliminary issues judgment.

Suffian has developed strong oral and written advocacy skills through his work as a litigation fee-earner in civil litigation, caseworker in employment law and FRU Volunteer. These experiences allowed him to make submissions in small claims before the County Court, Preliminary Hearings before the Employment Tribunal and the First-tier Tribunal (Social Entitlement Chamber). This has developed Suffian’s ability to work under pressure and deliver time-sensitive work, and furthered his knowledge of, and interest in, procedural rules.

Whilst studying for the Bar, Suffian received several awards and scholarships, including the Dean’s Scholarship for Academic Excellence, Blackstone Scholarship (Major Award) & Certificate of Honour from the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple; the latter was awarded for his outstanding performance on the BPTC. Suffian also mooted and debated extensively and received advocacy training from the Kalisher Trust.

Before starting pupillage, Suffian taught students on the Barrister Training Course and on the Solicitors’ Qualification examination, which has allowed him to keep his legal knowledge up to date. Suffian is a member of ELBA and follows the Institute of Employment Rights.

Outside of a busy work schedule, Suffian likes to keep fit by playing badminton and going to the gym. He supports Liverpool F.C. and enjoys watching the boxing.
