This Saturday 18 March saw Winchester Crown Court open its doors to the public, attracting over 5,000 people to an event organised by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Criminal Justice Board and Her Majesty’s Court and Tribunal Service. Visitors were able to visit prison cells and vans, learn about career opportunities in criminal justice and see a mock trial staged by real judges, barristers, solicitors and police officers.

3PB's Winchester office had a starring role in this very successful Open Day with 3PB criminal law barrister Berenice MulvannyBerenice MulvannyCall: 2009 receiving great plaudits for her speech about "A day in the life of a barrister." 3PB's well-known "stress judges" were a massive hit again and are pictured here on the left, in front of Berenice and fellow criminal law barrister Jonathan UnderhillJonathan UnderhillCall: 2008.

Her Honour Judge Angela Morris, the Recorder of Winchester and Resident Judge, said: "The day allows members of the public the opportunity to observe the various functions of the crown court in action and to engage with the organisations involved in the justice system so as to better understand the role each plays within it and, hopefully, to remove some of the myths and misconceptions that may still prevail. Diversity and inclusion is an important part of what a modern justice system should look like, which is why these principles are at the heart of this open day event. I believe that public confidence in the legal system can best be achieved by those who operate within it engaging with members of the public to inform and explain how we meet the challenges and complexities of the job we do."

Big thanks also go to 3PB's Francisca Da CostaFrancisca da CostaCall: 2006, Stuart Pringle, Natalie Bryan and Abi Griffin who helped Berenice and Jonathan answer questions from the many visitors to the 3PB stand.
