3PB’s specialist commercial, public, and information law barrister Mariya PeykovaMariya PeykovaCall: 2013 appears in the new Channel 4 documentary ‘Untold: Love in the Wild – The Real Dating Experiment’ which has been listed as one of the best shows to stream this week in the Guardian.

Airing today, the documentary explores how modern dating is evolving. It highlights concerns regarding the use of AI-powered algorithms by service providers and the implications for users' personal data. It addresses the increasing apprehension among younger generations about the 'gamification' of online dating and its potential impact on mental health, as well as the effects of algorithmic decision-making in the context of digital intimacy.

Mariya discussed how users perceive dating apps as having 'gamified' online dating. She explores how users believe that certain built-in features are intentionally designed to keep them engaged with the apps rather than promoting real-life dates. This approach seems aimed at maximising profits through dark patterns that trick users into paying for access to 'better' matches and increased visibility. Additionally, some users’ express concerns about AI-powered algorithms, feeling they lack transparency regarding how decisions are made about which profiles are shown to them and who can view their profiles.
