Three 3PB Barristers appointed as Deputy High Court Judges

5th September 2018

National chambers 3PB Barristers – formerly 3 Paper Buildings – has seen 3 of its barristers appointed as Deputy High Court judges on a single day, today Tuesday 4 September. The Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, the Right Honourable The Lord Burnett of Maldon, announced that Nigel Lickley QC, Ruth Henke QC and Mathew Gullick have all been appointed Deputy High Court Judges – alongside 29 others. This looks like a first for any chambers to have 3 barristers appointed as Deputy High Court Judges on a single day.

3PB’s Head of Chambers Nigel Lickley has acted as prosecuting and defence counsel in a number of murder and manslaughter cases and in regulatory crime. Nigel was the Leader of the Western Circuit from 2010 to 2013 and was elected a Bencher of Gray’s Inn in 2013. In 2015 he was authorised to sit as a Recorder at the Central Criminal Court.

Mathew Gullick has a civil common law practice, specialising in public law and employment matters as well as all aspects of civil procedure and costs. He has appeared in numerous significant cases at appellate level, most recently in May 2018 in the Supreme Court, responding to a human rights challenge to the terms of the statutory miscarriage of justice compensation scheme. He was appointed as a Recorder in 2018.

Ruth Henke QC specialises in law affecting children and vulnerable adults and has acted in significant cases in the Family Court, the Court of Protection and the Administrative Court in England and Wales. Ruth is a member of the National Independent Safeguarding Board for Wales and the Welsh Advisory Panel to the Law Commission.

3PB Chief Executive Simon Astill commented : “We are very proud to see three of our 3PB barristers appointed to these important judicial posts. I am sure each of them will be a great credit to the High Court.”
