Family
Syra Flaxman-Ali is a busy junior family barrister who is regularly instructed in the full range of family disputes including private children, public children, injunctions, and finance cases.
Private Children
Syra represents both parents and children in private children matters and is particularly adept at dealing with vulnerable clients and those making allegations of domestic abuse.
Re M: Syra successfully argued against a Prohibited Steps Order being made that would prevent contact between her client’s partner and the children, which would have otherwise had significant consequences on the relationship and contact the children could have with their father.
Re T: Syra represented the child at a hearing where both parents were litigants in person. Syra held constructive discussions outside of Court which resulted in an agreed final order, concluding what had been very long and protracted proceedings.
Public Children
Syra regularly acts for local authorities and children in public law matters, including at contested final hearings. Syra also takes instructions for parents, appreciating the extremely difficult position they find themselves in, and endeavouring to secure the best possible outcome.
A Local Authority v Mrs H (Mother to V) & Ors [2025] EWFC 316: Syra acted in this reported case as second junior for the children in a complex fact-finding hearing where a baby had sadly died and medical evidence indicated multiple incidents of trauma. There were a number of parties involved, and Syra was crucial in the analysis and consolidation of large volumes of their phone records, which acted as important evidence for the Court’s consideration.
Re M: Syra recently obtained care and placement orders for a local authority in a finely-balanced case, where the parents had begun to make some of the necessary changes, but the local authority considered this could not be sustained or evidenced within the children’s timescales, with which the Court agreed.
Injunctions
Syra takes instructions for Family Law Act matters, representing both applicants and respondents robustly.
P v P: Syra acted for the applicant in a two-day contested Non-Molestation Order application, securing a final order for her client, with the Court making findings against the respondent and agreeing to extend the period of operation of the order significantly to protect both the applicant and her child.
Finance
Syra also takes instructions on financial matters, and works particularly hard at the FDR stage to try to achieve a beneficial settlement for her client where possible, to relieve clients from the stress of litigation and allow them to start to move on with their lives.
D v D: Syra achieved a positive settlement for her client where purchasing a property outright was incredibly important to them, but the assets were limited.
L v T: Syra acted pro bono, achieving a settlement which enabled the client to continue living in the family home with her child for a period of time, giving the client the breathing space needed to plan for the future.
