Crime

Sunyana has been instructed on a broad range of criminal work including drugs and sex offences, benefit fraud, violence and driving matters. She regularly appears in Magistrates' Courts, Youth Courts and the Crown Court. She has also appeared for government agencies, undertaking work for the National Probation Service, Local Authorities and Revenue and Customs.

Sunyana's notable cases include:

R v V and others: Second junior to Christopher Parker QC for the Crown in a nine-handed conspiracy to supply drugs, manslaughter, s.18 GBH and arson with intent to endanger life.

R v K and others: junior for the Department of Work and Pensions in a nine-handed conspiracy to defraud the DWP and North Cornwall District Council.

R v Ocran [2010] EWCA Crim 1209: Represented the Appellant in the Court of Appeal for an appeal against sentence on whether exceptional circumstances to disapply the mandatory minimum sentence of five years for the possession of firearms.

R v Passoni [2009] EWCA Crim 1217 - Appeared for the Appellant in an appeal against sentence in the Court of Appeal for burglary and assault occasioning actual bodily harm on an elderly victim

R v Clarke & Others - an all day sentence in a 7 handed 14 count indictment of conspiracy to steal and handling stolen goods in the Crown Court.

R v Lomas - Client acquitted after trial in the Youth Court for GBH.

Sunyana has recently been placed on the Crown Prosecution Service Approved List of Advocates for the Western Circuit under category 1. Sunyana has also assisted in advising on appeals to the Privy Council from the Court of Appeal in Jamaica.

Sunyana has also provided criminal law lectures as part of the Crime Group Seminars to both the Bar and solicitors on "the Criminal Procedure Rules 2010" and "Closing Speeches and Pleas in Mitigation in the Magistrates' Court".
